Would It Make A Difference If The FBI Were To Investigate Kavanaugh?

USA president Donald Trump has acknowledged that past accusations of sexual misconduct against him have influenced the way he views similar allegations against other men, including his Supreme Court nominee.

He made the comments at a news conference in NY a day before Judge Brett Kavanaugh was set to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee amid multiple accusations of sexual misconduct. Kavanaugh, testifying second, forcefully denied the accusation. Joe Manchin said he supported Flake’s call to push off a full Senate vote until the FBI investigates Ford’s allegation.

President Donald Trump will have to ask the FBI for the investigation into Kavanaugh.

Flake’s proposal was endorsed by GOP Senator Lindsey Graham, a strong Kavanaugh backer who said, “What Jeff is saying makes sense to me”.

“Based on what we publicly know as far as the universe of people, I don’t see any reason why the FBI could not complete an investigation within one week”, said Mark Zaid, a Washington lawyer and expert in security clearance and background investigations. “His testimony was powerful, honest, and riveting”, Trump said.

Both Republicans and Democrats have admitted the confirmation process has been unfair to both Kavanaugh and Ford, whose personal lives have been cast in the spotlight.

As of Friday afternoon, there are 49 Republicans voting for Kavanaugh with Murkowski and Maine’s Susan Collins undecided. “And their having fun at my expense”, Ford responded, adding, “They were laughing with each other”.

Trump said he was “just hearing” about comments from Arizona Sen.

The review is meant to look into allegations by Christine Blasey Ford, who says Judge Kavanaugh groped her and attempted to disrobe her at a high school party in 1982.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, had opposed involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation but said Friday he would take up Flake’s case. In Kavanaugh’s testimony, he also said he was “100%” sure he did not sexual assault anyone.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, comprising 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats, is scheduled to vote Friday on whether to recommend Kavanaugh’s nomination to the full chamber for confirmation. But what exactly the FBI will investigate still remains a mystery. “She gave good testimony”. Only the White House can do that, and President Trump announced Friday afternoon he would do so, ordering the FBI to investigate his nominee. She described “uproarious laughter” by Kavanaugh and Judge, who has said he doesn’t recall such an incident.

Earlier, attorney Michael Avenatti revealed claims by a woman named Julie Swetnik, who alleged she was gang-raped at a drunken party around 1982, and that Kavanaugh and Judge were “present” at the time. In the morning, he announced that he would support Kavanaugh’s nomination.

Through a campaign spokesman, Sununu said the Senate “should think carefully about the next steps in this process”.
