Huawei Mate X vs Samsung Galaxy Fold: how they compare

February 24 23:19 2019

The tagline, “World’s first foldable 5G smartphone”. “On all the benchmarks you can see the performance, the speed is the fastest for 5G in the world.” said Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer business group.

Unfolded, the Mate X is only 5.4mm thin – thinner than most tablets on the market today according to Huawei.

Open and close. Open and close.

When folded, It becomes a dual display phone – one side is a 6.6-inch (2480 x 1148) 19.5:9 display while the other is a 6.38-inch (2480 x 892) 25:9 display.

When you open the Mate X, it has an 8 inch display from corner to corner with no notch.

Look, no big ugly bezels! It means that the Samsung Galaxy Note isn’t going to be the only premium foldable smartphone competing for your attention (and wallets) in 2019.

I didn’t get to touch or hold the Mate X in my hands (nobody did), but 11mm isn’t thin for a smartphone. This has been made possible by the Falcon Wing design, a patented 100-component hinge mechanism.

When folded, the hardware also has a 6.38-inch display on its rear. Think of it like a rolled-up magazine. So… how do you feel about this new Huawei Mate X?

Speaking of internals, the Mate X rocks the Kirin 980, Huawei’s powerful 7-nanometre SoC, and the Balong 5000 modem chip which is 5G ready and has Huawei claiming the Mate X is “the world’s fastest 5G foldable phone“. – With 5G on the Mate X, Huawei says a 1GB movie can be downloaded in just 3 – yes, just 3 – seconds. Additionally, there are four cutting-edge 5G antennas built into the compact body of the HUAWEI Mate X to enhance connection quality. That’s only if the Play Store has [apps in] a native resolution in those ratios, if the price of foldables will come down – we want to deliver a device more people can use that’s affordable and [offers] more content with 5G.

Mate X comes with an upgraded 55W version of Huawei SuperCharge, which supposedly charges the phone to 85% in 30 minutes. This is where the three camera lenses are, alongside a fingerprint-scanning power button and a USB-C port.

It’s hard to convey just how cool-looking the Mate X is. In fact it seems Huawei is aware of this as they also presented a protection case in which you can slip the whole device in, trying to address this compromise of this surely better looking, but likely less practical design. The billboard has three images of the phone in various stages of the device being unfolded. Two apps can be browsed and used at the same time when it large-screen mode. If you pre-order the Galaxy Watch Active before it arrives in stores, you’ll get a free fast wireless charging pad that normally costs $59.99.

The Huawei Mate X is another standout piece of innovation and so is the asking price for this foldable smartphone. Where the Mate X isn’t display, Huawei gave it a fresh coat of paint.
