Duke Basketball: Florida State looking to make a statement on Saturday

January 18 10:23 2019

According to ESPN Stats & Info, it’s the first time a No. 1 Duke team has ever lost at home to an unranked opponent.

Aside from Barrett and Williamson, the players to know are Cam Reddish, Tre Jones, Jack White and Marques Bolden, all of which can score in bunches.

Coach Krzyzewski revealed after the game that Jones could be out for a while but confirmed the injury was just a shoulder sprain and there was no break.

Reddish, though, did not take part in Duke’s initial pregame warmups.

Monday night’s game plan went out the window early, and Duke’s grasp on the No. 1 ranking likely went with it, as the Blue Devils fell 95-91 in overtime to Syracuse, their first loss at home as the nation’s top-ranked team since 2006.

Duke’s schedule won’t get much easier moving forward.

The Blue Devils came out as advertised to open the first half with a dominant 12-0 lead over the Orange.

So having them out against Syracuse wasn’t totally foreign. Duke quickly answered with a three-pointer, but a dunk from Chukwu with under a minute remaining sealed the deal as the Blue Devils came up empty on their last three shots of the night. Jones was credited with his fourth steal of the game on the play but he suffered a separated right shoulder while achieving it. “I’m glad I made the shot”. This wasn’t the Battle that had been playing the previous three ACC matchups.

And, despite entering the game as 65-percent free-throw shooter, Barrett also made 8 of 9 from the line. It looked totally and completely unfazed by the most talented team in the sport, which is no small feat in itself, but gains points for impressiveness at a venue like Cameron Indoor Stadium with fans breathing down your neck and chest paint flying and deafening boos raining down with every ebb and flow. Opposing teams are shooting just 44.9 percent from inside the arc (26th in the NCAA) and 28.6 percent from 3-point range (13th in the NCAA) so far this year. If the 6-foot-8 wing can string together another good game and overcome a shooting slump that saw him shoot 18.4 percent from deep from December 2 until Saturday, the Blue Devils (14-1, 3-0 in the ACC) should have little problem carving up the zone.

The ball soared high through the air, looking like it was going to hit the scoreboard, before falling perfectly through the net.

Hughes gave it a chance just before halftime. Howard lobbed the ball to Battle, but it was a little strong and Battle caught the ball and was blocked by the rim.

Otherwise, SU would need some luck, Duke foul trouble, a plethora of 3-pointers to go down and big performances from starters and bench players alike. With the guard on the court, for barely six minutes, the Blue Devils raced to a 12-0 start while he also notched four steals. He came out later for another part of the warmups but was not on the court just prior to tipoff.
