Following devastating hurricanes in the United States, record droughts in Cape Town and forest fires in the Arctic, the IPCC makes clear that climate change is already happening, upgraded its risk warning from previous reports, and warned that every fraction of additional warming would worsen the impact.

She said students had a “vision for a safe-climate future”.

In New Zealand, strike organizers said they were pleased after a meeting with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Climate Change Minister James Shaw, saying they believed their government would take positive steps.

As part of the #FridaysForFuture movement headed by the activist, tens of thousands of young people around the world will be skipping school this Friday to march for change.

Organizer of the Victoria event, Antonia Paquin, 21, a second-year student at the University of Victoria, said she is taking the issue personally, since climate change will affect her directly – not just her children or grandchildren.

“We don’t want to strike”, the 14-year-old said.

Omar says she shares the same passion as her daughter for action on climate change, which has helped propel the Green New Deal onto the national stage.

Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old whose protests outside the Swedish parliament spurred a massive global movement of young people striking from school to demand bold action on the climate crisis, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Democratic legislative leaders, who have majorities in both the Maine House and Senate, and Gov. The Paris climate treaty calls for capping global warming at “well below” two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

He said students from across the province and around the world share the same sentiment.

More than 220 demonstrations were held across Germany.

“This is going to require radical measures and there isn’t the slightest sign of that happening yet”, said Quaschning.

There are marches scheduled at 1,769 sites in 112 countries.

In Stockholm, Greta Thunberg predicted that students won’t let up their protests. By December, more than 20,000 students had taken on Thunberg’s mantle, striking in at least 270 cities. “We’ve got to mobilize our entire society to rebuild ourselves to that we are the kind of place that leads on renewable energy, leads on environmental justice, leads on the dignity of human being on our Earth and those are the same fight”.
